Summary : Amusing but not riveting; too "cutesy."

Murder in Retirement was amusing but not really spell-binding. The author went a little "over-the-top" on many of the characters (the actors, Maude, etc.) in that they were stereotypes of stereotypes, not well-developed individuals. The plot was satisfactory, but some loose ends did not get tied up at the end and the final wrap-up was much longer than necessary. He could focus more on the elaboration of the main characters, Laura and Aaron. An o.k. escapist read.

Summary : Great book--if you lack common sense

This book is great if are planning on traveling to Costa Rica as a tourist for a short amount of time; however, it really does not emcompass the complexity of moving or investing in a foreign country. Don't be fooled--this book lacks substinative information on starting a business in Costa Rica, other than the overarching message that "Not everything in the States will work in Costa Rica." Oh, really? My other favorite section was "How to Find a Nice Girl." After "interviewing hundreds of quality Costa Rican women" the author managed to whittle through the unrespectable, poor, uneducated women who were only after him for his money and find a nice girl. I guess the real shame is that he wasn't able to complete this process through a mail-order catalog.

Summary : Once Again, a Masterpiece by Elkin

One of the most distinct voices in (Jewish) American literature, Stanley Elkin, has done it again with Mrs. Ted Bliss. From the title to the final chapter, the reader is forced to examine his/her preceonceptions about age, retirement, sex and social roles, and other stereotypes. Mrs. Ted Bliss, a retired widow with no skills, gets caught in a web of intrigue that leads to the downfall of a drug lord when she sells her car. Mrs. Ted Bliss, however, is no Mrs. Pollifax, ready to karate-chop her way out of danger. Give it a read if you want to laugh out loud.

This book is my Right Hand, as manager of the Residents Association of Costa Rica (ARCR), I have found that newcomers sometimes seem to know more about Costa Rica than people living here just because they read this excellent book.

Title : Non-Resident Offshore Tax Planning

Unfortunately it's not at straightforward as the previous poster is suggesting.Both the UK and Spain domestic tax rules can levy CGT on the disposal of assets for both residents, as well as where assets are located within their jurisdiction.

This is where double tax treaties come into play, and in the case of a Spanish resident owning property in the UK, the double tax treaty articles 13 (1) and 24(4) can ensure that any gain is taxed in the UK. Fortunately, you can usually avoid UK CGT by remaining non resident for a period of at least five complete tax years. In terms of Spanish tax, whilst the Spanish may be able to levy tax on the gain, the current position is that in practice many residents have found that the Spanish revenue authorities have not been interested in the gain arising in the UK.

So the book is in practice correct and a very interesting and informative read to boot.

Loaded with possibilities as well as helpful realities, this book is an invaluable asset in refining your vision of the life you'd most like to lead. The authors are ebullient examples of retirees who have blossomed after leaving the structured workplace. They share their wisdom ("when you have time, you have options") as well as their considerable practical knowledge. And there is no shortage of inspiration with role models cited ranging from Colonel Sanders to Mother Teresa.

The chapter on financial issues alone is worth the price of admission. The authors, experts at "working the web," sift through the mountain of information available for the nuggets that will help you make an informed decision.

If you yearned to see Alaska but considered it too expensive or thought a condo on a golf course would be a tranquil place to live, read this book before you make any decisions.

The Retirement Sourcebook covers nothing less than the entire gamut of human experience from stress and living wills to how to get rid of junk mail.

You'll be referring to it for years to come.
