Summary : Amusing but not riveting; too "cutesy."

Murder in Retirement was amusing but not really spell-binding. The author went a little "over-the-top" on many of the characters (the actors, Maude, etc.) in that they were stereotypes of stereotypes, not well-developed individuals. The plot was satisfactory, but some loose ends did not get tied up at the end and the final wrap-up was much longer than necessary. He could focus more on the elaboration of the main characters, Laura and Aaron. An o.k. escapist read.

I have always been intimidated by the language, numbers, and ins-and-outs of investing and retirement planning. The literature I have read in the past was always too technical and assumed I knew things I didn't. Well, for me, Retire Rich... could have been titled: Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Successfully Planning for Retirement But Were Afraid to Ask. This book provided me with in-depth, intelligent information that I have wanted and needed to help me make plans for my future in a very clear, non-threatening, easy-to-read style. I have gained so much knowledge and confidence from it! I plan to give copies of this book to my 30/40/50Something friends and family! Many thanks and cheers to the authors of this timely and informative book!

Title : Get a Life: You Don't Need a Million to Retire Well

Summary : Excellent Contrarian Viewpoint

This book should be required reading for anyone who thinks about retirement, from those just starting out in their 20's and 30's to those nearing retirement. The book is a refreshing, contrarian view to the conventional wisdom of "save tons of money for retirement", "you'll need 70-100% of your current income in retirement", etc., etc., etc. The traditional retirement literature is focused almost exclusively on money, with which Warner takes exception.

Warner's focus is on the whole person - he makes a very compelling argument that money is a FACTOR in a good retirement, but that it is also important to cultivate health, outside interests, friendships and family. He believes these latter factors have a FAR greater influence on a successful retirement than money. He bases this viewpoint on research among those enjoying active, successful retirements.

Warner is not a Pollyanna, saying not to even think about retirement savings (as some critics seem to suggest). The book contains some common sense ideas on savings and admits that having SOME money may help. Warner's point, however, is that money alone isn't going to make you have a successful retirement if you neglected your family, friends, outside interests, spirituality and health in order to get the money.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who ever thinks about retirement. You may not agree with the proposition, but the book will really help expand your view of the elements of a good retirement and may help you plan a more enjoyable life.

Title : The Bond Book

Summary : I read this book cover to cover--AND IT ROCKS!

As an individual investor, I hadn't had a significant amount of experience with the bond market. Thau's book was a pleasure to read, and I believe it touches on every topic one needs to understand to become an educated bond investor. In short, it rocked me like a hurricane. I highly recommend it.

Summary : One of the best all round books on retirement planning!

As a Certified Financial Planner, I recommend this book to many of my clients who are seriously planning their retirements. Warner has done a great job putting things in the proper perspective with a book that is an "easy read". While adequate money is important to a satisfactory retirement (and helping clients build a satisfactory net worth is how I make my living), I do find, as has Warner, that there are more important things such as health, friends, and a purpose (i.e., reasons to get up in the morning) when it comes to planning out one's retirement. I frequently ask clients what they plan to do when they retire. When they say "go fishing" or "play golf", I then ask them what they plan to do the second week/month/year. And I keep asking the question until they realize that its a serious one. Warner takes it further with discussion and clear examples. In short, a must read for anyone approaching retirement.

Title : Gateways (Repairman Jack Novels (Hardcover))
Author : F. Paul Wilson

Summary : A real treat for Repairman jack fans

yes, this is the book for connoiseurs of Jack, drawing as it does form other stories by F Paul Wilson, in particular The Barrens and even Nightworld itself. It starts with news that Jack's father has been the victim of a hit and run accident in Florida, and our anti-hero must leave New York and travel down to visit him. Wilson provides his usual tense atention-grabbing scene at the start of the novel, as Jack's false identity and smuggling abilities are put to the test as he is forced to take a plane in the high-security aftermath of 9/11. Now when even Repairman Jack is afraid of being highjacked in mid-air, something has clearly gone wrong in America...

Anyway, on arrival in Florida it becomes clear that this was no random accident, and that Jack's father has quite a few secrets of his own. Without giving too much away, there are some surprise appearances along the way, with some of the cast of Nightworld sneaking out for a look at our world...I'm talking about you and your kin, Lobster-Wasp, as well as the one whose name we dare not speak (or borrow). These events are clearly going to require a slight re-writing of Nightworld by Wilson, as the current text was written before these recent Jack novels and does not contain any reference to Jack having experienced the events of Gateways...however, I'm sure FPW will tie up the loose ends perfectly in what is the greatest saga in modern fiction.
