Online finance personal planning retirement resources and information
It would be great if we could all retire with a nice portfolio of savings and pension income, without having to worry about paying the bills most retired people pay.
Yet...many retirees are living out their retirement on the breadline without much hope for even going on holiday without being assisted by relatives or even handouts. Don't let yourself be one of them...it's never too late!
Title : Retire Rich: The Baby Boomer's Guide to a Secure Future Author : Bambi Holzer Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : insightful
My husband shared "Retire Rich" with me. Even though he has been in the financail services business for 20 years, I have to admit I never really understood all the concepts necessary to feel comfortable with what we have been able to save. "Retire Rich" led me through the maze of complex financial terms/concepts and explained them in words and examples that I quickly grasped. I found myself saying "I never knew that" or "I see" scores of times as I read through the book. I especially liked the style in which the book is written, it doesn't talk down or up to me. In a nutshell, "Retire Rich" answers questions that every spouse asks.
Title : You're Not Old Until You're Ninety: Best to Be Prepared, However Author : Rebecca H Latimer Rating : 4 Stars out of 5. Summary : This book is for all ages
I was pleasantly surprised to get so much benefit from this book even though I am definitely not old! (49!) The book helped me to realize that old age is definitely "mental" and the book gives good, reasonable advice for being happy and healthy at any age. This would be a great book for anyone who is learning to deal with aging parents or friends.
Title : Get a Life: You Don't Need a Million to Retire Well Author : Ralph Warner Rating : 4 Stars out of 5. Summary : One of the best all round books on retirement planning!
As a Certified Financial Planner, I recommend this book to many of my clients who are seriously planning their retirements. Warner has done a great job putting things in the proper perspective with a book that is an "easy read". While adequate money is important to a satisfactory retirement (and helping clients build a satisfactory net worth is how I make my living), I do find, as has Warner, that there are more important things such as health, friends, and a purpose (i.e., reasons to get up in the morning) when it comes to planning out one's retirement. I frequently ask clients what they plan to do when they retire. When they say "go fishing" or "play golf", I then ask them what they plan to do the second week/month/year. And I keep asking the question until they realize that its a serious one. Warner takes it further with discussion and clear examples. In short, a must read for anyone approaching retirement.
Title : Retire Rich with a Property Pension Author : Nicholas Braun Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : A fascinating read
If you're into property investment this book is absolutely critical reading. From April 2006 residential property will be an approved pension investment. This book does a good job of explaining why and how you should take advantage of this fantastic opportunity and save literally tens of thousands of pounds in tax.
There's also lots of info on the current commercial property sipps and all the other important pension changes that come into effect in 2006.
The author's has a good writing style and uses loads of examples throughout.
If you're into property investment or using property as an alternative to a traditional pension you'll find it a worthwhile read.
Title : The Baby Boomer Financial Wake-up Call: It's Not Too Late to Financially Secure! Author : Kay R. Shirley Rating : 1 Stars out of 5. Summary : This book does not cover enough real-life scenarios.
This book if fine if you have had the time and opportunity to put money aside for retirement.
It does not even touch upon those of us who are married for the second time, are basically just starting out all over again with nothing in the bank and no retirement packages at work and who are paying astronomical amounts in child support and will be until we are a hair away from retirement. How are we supposed to amass any money when the "ex" gets it all?
WE are the people who need the help. WE are the people who will be living on a very "fixed" income while the ex-wife will be living in security using the child support money for her retirement.
I'm totally disgusted.
