Title : Have a Healthy and Happy Retirement
Author : Michael Apple
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Do you want to make the most of new opportunities?
One of the greatest changes to have taken place over the last years is the attitude to retirement and ageing. No longer do the older generation creep along as Old Age Pensioners. Instead we see Seniors enjoying their freedom, better health, and with a little luck and planning, a comfortable lifestyle.
Dr Michael Apple, a GP who is also a writer, has brought all this together in his latest book. He urges anyone approaching retirement to think positively about what it will mean, and to seize with both hands the opportunities which are there. He advises us not to let this major change in life catch up on us without some planning, since he points out that in retirement we are viewed in a different light not only by others but by ourselves as well. He explains how some of the relationships we have will change, and how and why even our children may look at us differently.
So, read this book to find out about how to make the most of your opportunities - browse through it - and you will find out all you need to know about moving from a fixed daily routine to using your time more freely. He acknowledges that poor health or a disability may be a factor to contend with, and gives good advice about how to cope with some of these problems.
His sound recommendations are: keep healthy physically and emotionally, look at how ageing affects the body and the mind, make sure you are safe, care for your appearance, and maybe even reassess your sex life.
If you need further help, then the list of information and resources in the book will point you in the direction you seek.

Title : Roth to Riches: The Ordinary to Roth Ira Handbook
Author : John D. Bledsoe
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : An easy-to-read book on Roth IRAs that's also comprehensive.
This is the first consumer-oriented book published (July, 1997) about the Roth IRA. As it turns out, it is a superb effort and one that other authors will be hard pressed to match with future Roth IRA titles. The author obviously spent many months fine-tuning his work. As the editor of the Roth IRA Web Site, I read this book in well under two hours and found it to be a remarkably easy-to-read book. One doesn't expect books on topics such as Roth IRAs to be pleasant reads, but this book was both fun-to-read and informative at the same time! I also gave the book to several others to read (including one person who had no idea how IRAs worked) and they confirmed my judgement. This is a great book on both traditional IRAs and Roth IRAs.
From a technical viewpoint, the information presented appears to be quite accurate and comprehensive. Although the Roth IRA technical corrections were not yet signed into law when the book was published, the author was obviously quite familiar with the proposed changes and he does reference the more important provisions. (The last page of the book provides a form to send in for a free report on the final Roth regulations when available.)
The book is 198 pages (8½" x 11" size) with the actual text running through page 90. Pages 91 through 121 are what the author calls Roth Conversion Advantage charts. Most of the rest of the book consists of a reprint of IRS Publication 590, the IRS explanation of IRAs. After you see the IRS explanation of how traditional IRAs work, you will like Roth IRAs even more!

Title : Rich Dad's Prophecy
Author : Sharon L. Lechter
Rating : 4 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Building your ship or your castle? You choose. But do build
This is a wake up call to anyone still thinking that learning the investment game is optional. It is NOT!
This is a very useful addition to the Rich Dad's series mainly because it helps screw in concepts from the first book Rich Dad Poor Dad, the second one The Cash Flow Quadrant and the third one Guide to Investing.
I see each one as a lecture. And there is a constant build up helping to shape and focus the mind of newbies in the world of professional investment.

Title : Get a Life: You Don't Need a Million to Retire Well (Get a Life: You Don't Need a Million to Retire Well)
Author : Ralph E. Warner
Rating : 4 Stars out of 5.
Summary : One of the best all round books on retirement planning!
As a Certified Financial Planner, I recommend this book to many of my clients who are seriously planning their retirements. Warner has done a great job putting things in the proper perspective with a book that is an "easy read". While adequate money is important to a satisfactory retirement (and helping clients build a satisfactory net worth is how I make my living), I do find, as has Warner, that there are more important things such as health, friends, and a purpose (i.e., reasons to get up in the morning) when it comes to planning out one's retirement. I frequently ask clients what they plan to do when they retire. When they say "go fishing" or "play golf", I then ask them what they plan to do the second week/month/year. And I keep asking the question until they realize that its a serious one. Warner takes it further with discussion and clear examples. In short, a must read for anyone approaching retirement.

Title : Rich Dad's Prophecy
Author : Sharon L. Lechter
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Employed or Self Employed? - Financial Future SHOCKER!
This book has made me sit up and think! I'm shocked!
Millions of people depend on their plans for retirement income.
Yet, when programmes first became popular over two decades ago, Robert Kyosaki's rich dad WARNED that these plans would cause one of the BIGGEST stock market crashes in history... a crash that would financially destroy the unprepared. Now rich dad's prophecy is coming true.
* How the fears, dreams, and actions of millions of 'baby boomers' will control the economic future...
I understood from the book that although we had the NASDAQ exchange record its biggest ever one-day fall, back in April, 2000, - the worst is still yet to come!
Read it NOW, or you'll regret it!

Title : "Which?" Guide to Pensions: How to Maximise Your Retirement Income ("Which?" Consumer Guides)
Author : Jonquil Lowe
Rating : 4 Stars out of 5.
Summary : A good, all-round, general introduction.
You can't normally go wrong with a Which? guide and this one is no exception. I have recently set up my own business and needed to learn all about company pension schemes and legislation.
This guide was an excellent starting point, covering all the major options available to me and clearing up a lot of the jargon. It even contains sections on maximising the performance of your pension.
This is the 1999 edition, but still contains reasonably current advice on Stakeholder pension plans. Considering the often tiresome nature of the subject matter, this is all highly informative stuff.

Title : The Three Boxes of Life: How to Get Out of Them
Author : Richard Nelson Bolles
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Still a mind-opener after all these years
I first read this book when it had been out only a few years, and it turned my head around. I had been brought up, like most children of the 'fifties, to think of life as a series of rigidly defined serial roles: first you were a student, then you were a worker, and finally you retired and got to do all the fun things you'd been putting off for the past 40-odd years. Having worked my way through graduate school, and done a bit of traveling in the process, I of course knew how artificial these distinctions were -- but I still tended to feel vaguely guilty about my "immature" lifestyle and rebuke myself for not "settling down" like a Real Grownup was "supposed to." Bolles set me straight -- in fact I was doing a pretty good job of balancing growth, work, and leisure in my life, and had nothing to be ashamed of. My subsequent work history has borne out the wisdom of his advice: I've been happiest and most productive when my life achieves that same balance; the most miserable time of my life was the nine-year period when I succumbed to the siren song of Silicon Valley and became a money-obsessed workaholic. This is a terrific book, and one that bears rereading every few years, especially when you feel your life slipping out of balance.
