Online park retirement home resources and information
It would be great if we could all retire with a nice portfolio of savings and pension income, without having to worry about paying the bills most retired people pay.
Yet...many retirees are living out their retirement on the breadline without much hope for even going on holiday without being assisted by relatives or even handouts. Don't let yourself be one of them...it's never too late!
Title : How to Retire Rich Author : James O'Shaughnessey Rating : 2 Stars out of 5. Summary : Reasonable runaways - Best way to lose big monies!
Mr. O'Shaughnessy outlines several of his investment strategies and in particular his "reasonable runaways". If you look at his numbers AND factor in costs of establishing a similar group of stocks (something he neglects to do)the SP 500 is the clear winner.
A VERY IMPORTANT piece of investing advice that Mr. O'Shaughnessy advises against is the use of stop-limit orders in his portfolios. By neglecting to use this very important investment tool, you open yourself up to huge losses in the very questionable turnaround stocks that have just been run up in price. Most of these WILL go down and many they will go down big and not recover. Take the advise of someone that has been watching (and burned very badly) by taking his advice and not using stop-limit prices, USE THEM IF YOU EMPLOY THIS VERY RISKY STRATEGIE!!!
If you look at ANY of his mutual funds, you will clearly see that the performance of all of his funds badly trails the SP 500. His expense ratios are also out of line to the high side, something that he warns against in this book.
The three pieces of advice that are of any value in the entire book are to establish a plan, stick to it, and, if 87% (or so) of mutual funds (including his) do not match the performance of the SP 500, why are you investing in anything other than the SP 500?
Good luck to all!!!
Title : You've Earned It, Don't Lose It: Mistakes You Can't Afford to Make When You Retire Author : Suze Orman Rating : 1 Stars out of 5. Summary : The math is wrong
The time value of money analysis in this book does not take into account that money has time value and thus the results of the studies Orman presents are biased in the wrong direction. Also the rate of inflation of 5% is too high based on current and past values. This also biases the results. It is funny to see the results of her long term care insurance policy analysis. According to Orman, the insured pays in $1,255 each year for 30 years and alternately if they had not taked the policy get no credit for the compound growth rate this money would earn had not they taken the policy. It makes a huge different that was not considered Also there is a chart that shows a comparison of 5% simple and compound interest on an inflation rider. Certainly, inflation is not a simple interest growth rate. The data of Orman's table make no sense whatsoever and certainly have no bearing on the long term care policy decision.
Title : A Peaceful Retirement Author : Miss" "Read Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : A lovely and entertaining read, a book to get lost in.
Miss Read, again manages to captivate the feelings of those who to are approaching retirement; and also of those who aren't. Her characters are all someone you know in your own life. Always feeling that they could be so and so. I always felt as if I was included in the story, like I was a friend. I'm an avid reader of her books but it seems this is the last one? She puts such warmth and feeling into this book it spills out from every page. It is obvious that her friends are as devoted to her as she is to them whatever happens. The frequent requests of marriage from John Jenkins are bittersweet and has nearly succumb once or twice. Her lifelong friend Amy, trying so hard to matchmake over the years, tries not to let John Jenkins slip through Miss Reads' fingers but alas fails again. She gets great support from Henry Mawne, who has also been a suitor in the past but Miss Read also gently refused him. She looks forward to retirement with joy and some trepidation, however handles the situation very well. I hope there will be more stories from her in the not to distant future.
Title : One World, Ready or Not Author : Wil Greider Rating : 3 Stars out of 5. Summary : Take two aspirins, don't call me in the morning
A man goes to his dermatologist to have an ugly mole removed from his neck. He returns one week later to have his stitch removed.
"The good news is, you won't have any scar," the doctor says. "The bad news is, you'll be dead in six months."
Though many people criticize Mr. Greider's conclusions, few -- even eminent scholars -- can say why. They admit most of his facts are correct (damning with faint praise) without saying which facts are wrong. They provide simplistic parables about the economics of hot dogs and buns without benefit either of logic or evidence. In short, most of Mr Greider's "critics" seem more culpable than Greider of the crimes against intellectual integrity of which they accuse him.
Let's simply stipulate that Mr. Greider is like Ralph Nader, a Cassandra. Let's stipulate further that he is histrionic even paranoic. Let's simply rest with "the facts".
What we have left is the picture of a global economy in ICU, surrounded (a) by technicians who are not monitoring high performance, but failing vital signs; (b) by FedEx boxes for shipping body parts.
Had the world not already experienced an economic death but 70 years ago, we might dismiss Greider's prognosis.
So, his facts are worrisome; but, not as troubling as his prescriptions. He doesn't think it inevitable that the patient has to die because the "government" can somehow "keep it going" with a different IV solution, tracts to bolster the spirits of the patient's next of kin, and specific instructions to other governmental and cultural caretakers.
He doesn't satisfy me that he understands that we are not simply in another industrial revolution, but a post-industrial evolution. Yes, the whole world is changing, as it has several time before in the last 100,000 years -- but what comes from that process will be far better -- and simpler -- than what is now becoming ruins.
So, Mr. Greider gets full credit for research, and no credit for insight. Therefore, a 5.
--John Grassi
