Online government retirement pension resources and information

It would be great if we could all retire with a nice portfolio of savings and pension income, without having to worry about paying the bills most retired people pay.

Yet...many retirees are living out their retirement on the breadline without much hope for even going on holiday without being assisted by relatives or even handouts. Don't let yourself be one of them...it's never too late!

Title : Iras, 401(K)s and Other Retirement Plans: Taking Your Money Out (Iras, 401(K)S Other Retirement Plans, 3rd ed)
Author : Twila, Ph.D. Slesnick
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Thorough coverage for the tax professional. Easy to use.

I do taxes. I have been a "tax professional," working for a reputable CPA firm, for eighteen years.

I imagine that most people think that we always read the most obscure laws, regulations and treatises on tax subjects before we make our decisions and recommendations. The fact is that most professionals are delighted to find publications which make good information easy to find. This book does that.

"How to Take Your Money Out" gives thorough coverage to a very complicated subject. Equally important is that it is almost enjoyable to read and that finding what you are looking for is easy. It is well organized and well indexed. When I looked for answers, I found them, on the first shot.

There are plenty of people, both professionals and taxpayers, who are wondering what to do about IRA and other retirement plan distributions. Having this book on the shelf will give you confidence that you'll know where to look when you need the answers.

Title : The Bond Book
Author : Annette Thau
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Highly Recommended!

This is an accessible introduction to bonds by a financial professional whose first book - as unlikely as it may seem - was a study of Max Jacob, the French poet. The literary background of the author, Annette Thau, may account for her book's clear, easy-to-read style. Most authors who write about bonds tend to get lost in the complex mathematics and specialized jargon of the bond markets. Not Annette Thau. Whether you are an individual investor trying to balance your portfolio with bonds, or a student of finance looking for a more lucid explanation of the subject than you can find in your textbooks, we highly recommend this book to you.

Title : First Days of Retirement: Devotions to Begin Your Best Years
Author : Mary Harwell Sayler
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : An excellent way to start out your retirement years!

I amazed how helpful this book has been as I have entered the next period of my life. As I look at the next ten or twenty years, I am looking for ways to build a new career of Ministry. Since I don't really believe Christians can "retire" in the normal sense, this devotional has been helpful to me as I search out God's call on my life. The author seems to be very sensitive to the process I am going through as I make this adjustment to a new way of life. The use of scripture, comments, prayer, thought-provoking themes, and journally all help create a powerful and balanced journey. The particular theme for each day has usually touched on very relevant issues, and encouraged me to think and pray as I move forward with my life.

Title : Your Guide to Retiring to Mexico, Costa Rica and Beyond: Finding the Good Life on a Fixed Income
Author : Shelley Emling
Rating : 3 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Worth reading.

A good book in that it allows you to compare Mexico with other countries. The only negative I can think of is that in the Mexico section the author refers to Mexico City throughout. Not many retirees want to settle in Mexico City.

Title : Wall Street on a Shoestring: Financial Success for Just Five Dollars a Day
Author : Clare La Plante
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Wonderful book full of great common-sense advice

Ms. La Plante has taken a complex subject and explained it in such a simple and concise way. And she has included wonderful, common-sense advice. The first two chapters alone were worth the price. What a great concept, too. Most of us would never miss the $5.00 a day! Highly recommended!

Title : How to Retire Rich
Author : James O'Shaughnessey
Rating : 2 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Reasonable runaways - Best way to lose big monies!

Mr. O'Shaughnessy outlines several of his investment strategies and in particular his "reasonable runaways". If you look at his numbers AND factor in costs of establishing a similar group of stocks (something he neglects to do)the SP 500 is the clear winner.

A VERY IMPORTANT piece of investing advice that Mr. O'Shaughnessy advises against is the use of stop-limit orders in his portfolios. By neglecting to use this very important investment tool, you open yourself up to huge losses in the very questionable turnaround stocks that have just been run up in price. Most of these WILL go down and many they will go down big and not recover. Take the advise of someone that has been watching (and burned very badly) by taking his advice and not using stop-limit prices, USE THEM IF YOU EMPLOY THIS VERY RISKY STRATEGIE!!!

If you look at ANY of his mutual funds, you will clearly see that the performance of all of his funds badly trails the SP 500. His expense ratios are also out of line to the high side, something that he warns against in this book.

The three pieces of advice that are of any value in the entire book are to establish a plan, stick to it, and, if 87% (or so) of mutual funds (including his) do not match the performance of the SP 500, why are you investing in anything other than the SP 500?

Good luck to all!!!
