Title : How to Retire Rich
Author : James O'Shaughnessey

Summary : Started good, but then...

I don't know how to take this book. On the positive side, it offers seemingly reasonable investment strategies for inexperienced investors. At worst, the strategies are thought provoking. At best, they may be providing strategies that will make alot of people retire rich. On the negative side, I am skeptical of the author's intentions of writing this book. He sells mutual funds that implement the strategies (which is not necessarily a bad thing), but the funds have yearly fees of 1.5% each! That is very high for a passive fund. Why so high? All of a sudden, I want to stop reading. Finally, the book didn't teach me 250+ pages of info. It may be good for the new investor, but for one like me that has read a few books (but not done alot yet), it didn't offer alot of new insight. (I just can't get that 1.5% out of my head...)

Summary : Simply the best book I've found yet on the subject.

I bought this book for a client who is retiring shortly. I have to say this is the best book I've found yet on this subject. It gives practical advice in a short, readable format. So many books claim to show you how, then give simply crummy, or at best questionable advice. There are no magic bullets. There are no shortcuts. As a financial planner I have read many so called 'self help' (more like self mutilation usually) books on the subject, and received many good laughs as a result. In a bull market anyone can swim, but when the tide goes out, we'll see who's swimming naked. This book gives you the information you'll need to prepare financially for the rest of your life. It does not tell you all of the answers (would you really want to read one tha claims to?) but it does lead you in the right direction toward finding them. I strongly reccomend this book to anyone planning to retire, be it 3 days or 30 years from now. You could spend much more, for much worse advice. Buy it, and get one for a friend.

Summary : One of Top 3 books on business I've ever read

Even though the Joy of Not Working is technically not a business book, I'd lump it in that category nonetheless. I've read what seems like a gazillion books and I have to rate this little jewel as one of the three best business/lifestyle books I've ever read (the other two are Hawkins' Growing a Business and Lancaster's Secret Money Machine)--it's filled with wit and humor and tons of little tips. I've read it three times and Zelinski seems to add stuff between each reading. Enlighted guy!

Dr Michael Apple, a GP who is also a writer, has brought all this together in his latest book. He urges anyone approaching retirement to think positively about what it will mean, and to seize with both hands the opportunities which are there. He advises us not to let this major change in life catch up on us without some planning, since he points out that in retirement we are viewed in a different light not only by others but by ourselves as well. He explains how some of the relationships we have will change, and how and why even our children may look at us differently.

So, read this book to find out about how to make the most of your opportunities - browse through it - and you will find out all you need to know about moving from a fixed daily routine to using your time more freely. He acknowledges that poor health or a disability may be a factor to contend with, and gives good advice about how to cope with some of these problems.

His sound recommendations are: keep healthy physically and emotionally, look at how ageing affects the body and the mind, make sure you are safe, care for your appearance, and maybe even reassess your sex life.

If you need further help, then the list of information and resources in the book will point you in the direction you seek.

I had just made a bad decision in the stock market when I started to read Invest in Yourself. The book provided me with so many strategies to improve my financial life that I saw how to make up for my mistake in a hurry.

I like the fact that this book shows you how to break the bondage to a paycheck that so many of us suffer. That dead end job isn't a necessity, it's a choice, and there are powerful alternative strategies.

This book is loaded with financial information, techniques and stories, but it's really a book about happiness. About what gives lasting satisfaction. Thus, it transcends information and provides wisdom. I am grateful to have read it.
