age fisherman old poem retirementIt would be great if we could all retire with a nice portfolio of savings and pension income, without having to worry about paying the bills most retired people pay.
The outlined strategy will work IF you start young enough. The examples given assume the aspiring millionaire is in their early 20s - plenty of time to make GBP1m through the power of compound interest - but too late for many people. My main disappointment with the book is that the strategy outlined is for the long-run (40-50 years) so you'll be about 65 when you make that million. For anyone looking for a faster alternative, this isn't it. If you are (or know someone) who is 15-25 years old, I would recommend you get this book and follow its strategy (about savings in particular, not sure I agree with the pensions advice). Doing so will virtually guarantee financial security upon retirement. But if you want a strategy that delivers faster-returns, look elsewhere. However, regardless of your age, the book outlines sensible (and widely-known) principles of personal money management so it's valuable for those who have no idea where to begin. But if you're already pretty savvy about "paying yourself first" and watching the pennies, you will get limited value from this book.
The antidote to this is to adopt the "Pick your own Strawberries" approach to your finances. In the same way that you can get lots of lovely strawberries for less money by picking them direct from the field yourself, (cutting out the middlemen!) you can, with a little time and effort adopt the same principles with your finances. The Motley Fool series of books are the best I have yet come across to help the would be "Financial do it yourself'er". The OLD FOOLS RETIREMENT GUIDE is the latest in the series and is packed with invaluable information as to how to plan for your financial future. It is written in a concise easily digestible format and conveys it's very relevant points with humour and honesty. Pensions and investments need not be complicated as the City types would have you believe. This book blows a hole in the pomposity that surrounds finance and pensions. A great little read.
Dr Michael Apple, a GP who is also a writer, has brought all this together in his latest book. He urges anyone approaching retirement to think positively about what it will mean, and to seize with both hands the opportunities which are there. He advises us not to let this major change in life catch up on us without some planning, since he points out that in retirement we are viewed in a different light not only by others but by ourselves as well. He explains how some of the relationships we have will change, and how and why even our children may look at us differently. So, read this book to find out about how to make the most of your opportunities - browse through it - and you will find out all you need to know about moving from a fixed daily routine to using your time more freely. He acknowledges that poor health or a disability may be a factor to contend with, and gives good advice about how to cope with some of these problems. His sound recommendations are: keep healthy physically and emotionally, look at how ageing affects the body and the mind, make sure you are safe, care for your appearance, and maybe even reassess your sex life. If you need further help, then the list of information and resources in the book will point you in the direction you seek.
