Online 2008 early retirement resources and information
It would be great if we could all retire with a nice portfolio of savings and pension income, without having to worry about paying the bills most retired people pay.
Yet...many retirees are living out their retirement on the breadline without much hope for even going on holiday without being assisted by relatives or even handouts. Don't let yourself be one of them...it's never too late!
Title : The Coming Generational Storm: What You Need to Know About America's Economic Future Author : Laurence J. Kotlikoff Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Packed With Knowledge!
This volume is infinitely more thoughtful than most of the books that point to the expected insolvency of the Social Security system and pronounce that the fiscal sky is falling. After all, the U.S. economy has weathered plenty of fiscal crises before, but those in power have barely addressed this one. Authors Laurence J. Kotlikoff and Scott Burns ask you to realize that the government is saddling your children with unbearable debt. One by one, they strip away all the supposed answers to the demographic bulge and economic bust that characterize the impending mass retirement of the baby boom generation. They demonstrate that the dwindling number of working-age citizens simply will not be able to support the coming onslaught of retirees. The python has eaten the rabbit, but will it be able to swallow? Kotlikoff's "generational accounting" explains that government is running up charges on our kids' credit cards. And like any bill that doesn't get paid, this one will keep getting bigger. We recommend this nicely crafted book to all responsible citizens.
Title : The Bond Book Author : Annette Thau Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Straightforward and Clear
I really liked this book. It was well written and organized clearly. Everyone is crazy about stocks, so not much is really known about bonds. I read another book on bonds and still was unsure. This book was different. It was clear and thorough on all types of bond issues and offers clear warning on risks. Bonds are not as safe as I thought - if you think they are, definitely read this book. Many good ideas on setting up safe portfolios that will do well over time.
Title : Adventure of Retirement: It'S Author : A. Guild Fetridge Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Chock full of life transforming information - priceless!

Title : Get a Life: You Don't Need a Million to Retire Well (Get a Life: You Don't Need a Million to Retire Well) Author : Ralph E. Warner Rating : 4 Stars out of 5. Summary : One of the best all round books on retirement planning!
As a Certified Financial Planner, I recommend this book to many of my clients who are seriously planning their retirements. Warner has done a great job putting things in the proper perspective with a book that is an "easy read". While adequate money is important to a satisfactory retirement (and helping clients build a satisfactory net worth is how I make my living), I do find, as has Warner, that there are more important things such as health, friends, and a purpose (i.e., reasons to get up in the morning) when it comes to planning out one's retirement. I frequently ask clients what they plan to do when they retire. When they say "go fishing" or "play golf", I then ask them what they plan to do the second week/month/year. And I keep asking the question until they realize that its a serious one. Warner takes it further with discussion and clear examples. In short, a must read for anyone approaching retirement.
Title : Retirement Planning Guide Author : Robert J. Garner Rating : 4 Stars out of 5. Summary : Excellent pre and post retirement planning information.
This guide provides excellent pre-retirement planning suggestions. Has traps, obstacles and helpers outlined for quick review and advice. Has a number of "tools" in the form of worksheets to assist in planning for both before and after retirement events. Presents a number of post-retirement ideas with several suggestions of how to manage and/or increase your income in retirement. Authors are somewhat short on information for the mid 50's retiree concerning how to access 401k and IRA funds without penalty between 55 and 59 1/2. No info on what forms are needed and where they are available, or what needs to be filed and where. Has one slight reference in the appendix on how to accomplish withdrawals without penalty. Having read a number of retirement planning books available on the bookshelf, I found this volume excels in providing useful information not found in similar guide books.
Title : You Can Retire: While You're Still Young Enough to Enjoy It Author : Les Abromovitz Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Entertaining, easy to read - I'm ready to start my plan now!
I never thought anyone could write about how to retire early in an entertaining way. Along with great financial planning advice, the book is filled with anecdotes that make you realize that early retirement is feasible without sacrificing your current lifestyle. I enjoyed the "Seinfeld" and "Dilbert" references that made the advice easier to understand and digest. If you don't want to get up at 6:00 a.m. every morning until you're 65 or older, this is the book to read."
