Online contribution early insurance national retirement resources and information

It would be great if we could all retire with a nice portfolio of savings and pension income, without having to worry about paying the bills most retired people pay.

Yet...many retirees are living out their retirement on the breadline without much hope for even going on holiday without being assisted by relatives or even handouts. Don't let yourself be one of them...it's never too late!

Title : How to Retire Rich
Author : James O'Shaughnessey
Rating : 2 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Reasonable runaways - Best way to lose big monies!

Mr. O'Shaughnessy outlines several of his investment strategies and in particular his "reasonable runaways". If you look at his numbers AND factor in costs of establishing a similar group of stocks (something he neglects to do)the SP 500 is the clear winner.

A VERY IMPORTANT piece of investing advice that Mr. O'Shaughnessy advises against is the use of stop-limit orders in his portfolios. By neglecting to use this very important investment tool, you open yourself up to huge losses in the very questionable turnaround stocks that have just been run up in price. Most of these WILL go down and many they will go down big and not recover. Take the advise of someone that has been watching (and burned very badly) by taking his advice and not using stop-limit prices, USE THEM IF YOU EMPLOY THIS VERY RISKY STRATEGIE!!!

If you look at ANY of his mutual funds, you will clearly see that the performance of all of his funds badly trails the SP 500. His expense ratios are also out of line to the high side, something that he warns against in this book.

The three pieces of advice that are of any value in the entire book are to establish a plan, stick to it, and, if 87% (or so) of mutual funds (including his) do not match the performance of the SP 500, why are you investing in anything other than the SP 500?

Good luck to all!!!

Title : How to Retire Rich: Time-Tested Strategies to Beat the Market and Retire in Style
Author : James P. O'Shaughnessy
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : I am buying one of these books for each member of my family.

As an avid reader and a novice investor I could not put the book down. The information was clear and very understandable. I immediately went on line and was able to pull up the 50 stocks I will be using for Reasonable Runaways. My goal was to self manage my 401k. This has given me the tools to do so. I'm in it for the long term so will let you know in 25 years how the strategy worked. I feel strongly enough about the concept to share it with all my friends and family. Wouldn't it be fun to grow wealthy together???

I have also read "What Works on Wall Street". If you must chose between the two "How to Retire Rich" is the better book in my opinion. "What Works" does provide reinforcement of the ideas if that is important to you.

Title : Retirement Planning Guide
Author : Robert J. Garner
Rating : 4 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Excellent pre and post retirement planning information.

This guide provides excellent pre-retirement planning suggestions. Has traps, obstacles and helpers outlined for quick review and advice. Has a number of "tools" in the form of worksheets to assist in planning for both before and after retirement events. Presents a number of post-retirement ideas with several suggestions of how to manage and/or increase your income in retirement. Authors are somewhat short on information for the mid 50's retiree concerning how to access 401k and IRA funds without penalty between 55 and 59 1/2. No info on what forms are needed and where they are available, or what needs to be filed and where. Has one slight reference in the appendix on how to accomplish withdrawals without penalty. Having read a number of retirement planning books available on the bookshelf, I found this volume excels in providing useful information not found in similar guide books.

Title : Coming Up Short: The Challenge of 401(k) Plans
Author : Alicia Haydock Munnell
Rating : 4 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Warning for a disaster in the pipeline

Collective retirement accounts are out in the US. Saving for your own pension is in. Britain is going the same way. The argument in favor is that the saver can make his own invesment decisions. This book points out that this development tends to leave savers with too little money for a good pension. People underestimate how much money is needed. They put off saving. They overestimate investment returns and take very bad investment decisions. They do not realize the influence of the interest rate at the moment of retirement. The authors might have pointed out more clearly how individual accounts are far more risky than collective accounts. The book is not just a powerful indictment of the US system, but also a warning for the UK.

Title : Get a Life: You Don't Need a Million to Retire Well
Author : Ralph E. Warner
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : My favorite retirement book.

Lawyer/consumer advocate Ralph "Jake" Warner thinks the popular advice that implores Americans to save piles of money for retirement is hugely exaggerated. Jake urges us to have built a life worth living by middle age, and tells the stories of seniors who have done just that. He offers advice on many issues, such as deciding what a reasonable nest egg should be and developing a healthy lifestyle. This book will help you find your way to a more fulfilling retirement, while it eases your current stress level.
