It would be great if we could all retire with a nice portfolio of savings and pension income, without having to worry about paying the bills most retired people pay.
Yet...many retirees are living out their retirement on the breadline without much hope for even going on holiday without being assisted by relatives or even handouts. Don't let yourself be one of them...it's never too late!
Title : Rich Dad's Retire Young, Retire Rich: How to Get Rich and Stay Rich Forever! (Rich Dad's Advisors Series) Author : Robert T. Kiyosaki Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : More great ideas, more great context - huge value for money
This fourth book in the main series follows through the logical progression from 'taking care of your business' to retiring and doing what you want to do full time. Some people in the UK may find Robert Kiyosaki's American enthusiasm and repetitive writing style a bit hard to take - just stick with it and realise that making money is something that Americans do better then us! Others may say that you 'can't do those things here' - may I suggest to them that they need new advisors as I have not had any problems in implementing these ideas. I would read 'Rich Dad Poor Dad' and 'Cashflow Quadrant' before this book - could be a bit much at once otherwise.
The big gain from this, as with all the books, is the sense of challenge and attitude that comes across. Combined with the specific ideas for action and areas to think about Robert is able to lead you towards acheiving your financial goals, whatever they are.
Retiring before 45 is a dream that most us share, but few think is possible. I would rate these four books as being of equal value in helping me to be on track to reach this goal (despite having started at 31 years old), as my MBA. The MBA tells me how, Rich Dad helps me think of why, when and what.
The true value of these books is really demonstrated by their life expectancy on my book shelf at home. I have leant a number of copies of Rich Dad Poor Dad to friends and family, none of which have ever been returned! Since then my sister is now starting her own company and writing a book and friends have made some very profitable moves into property investment. None of these people, including myself, talked about such things before reading Robert's books.
Buy this book. Read it. then hide it and re-read it every few months - if you don't you will probably find that it disappears and those close to you start to have more money in their pockets!
A real delight.
Title : The Automatic Millionaire: A Powerful One-Step Plan to Live and Finish Rich Author : David Bach Rating : 3 Stars out of 5. Summary : Someones making themselves into a millionaire
I bought this book, and fair enough there are two nuggets of decent advice to make yourselve a millionaire. My favourite part of the book is the rather honest line, ' I once had an idea of how to make a million dollars and your holding it in your hands', Maybe not exactly word for word, but bang on. Other than the 'Latte factor' this book reminds me of one of those '1000 word essays' we were forced to produce in school, alright for the first 100 words and then everything from slanted handwriting to large letters to try and make it look like we had a 1000 words easy, but in reallity we were on our arses. On the plus side the book is cheap and easy to keep in good condition and therefore would make a shrewd present, and that's my money saving tip fellow readers.
Title : Five O'Clock Charlie Author : Marguerite Henry Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : A terrific gift for addicting a child to reading
This was my favorite book as a child, and I've been waiting years for it to come back into print so I can give copies to all the children on my gift list. (I'm lucky enough to have an old hardback edition of my own.) For young readers (especially the horse-crazy ones) on your gift list.
Title : 12 Steps to a Worry-Free Retirement Author : Daniel Kehrer Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Easy to understand.
This book lays out what you need to know about planning your retirement using easy to understand text and charts. The chapter I liked best was: Step 12 Monitor Your Retirement Plan's Pulse, I think its a good idea to read this chapter first.
Title : Celebration Author : Harry Crews Rating : 2 Stars out of 5. Summary : This is my first and last time to read this author's work.
I was so disappointed in the story because I expected more humor and less cruelty. If Stump is the symbol of the younger, materialistic generation and "The Old Ones" of our aging population, I shudder to think what Crews is predicting for the future. With a catalyst such as Too Much, whose intelligence I found hardly believable from her own background, we won't have to worry about society's demise by the atomic bomb because we'll surely destroy ourselves morally. Although I think Crews made some accurate social commentary, I don't think he had to use so much sexual imagery to do it. Personally, I had to discipline myself to push through some of the "bathtub scenes" with Stump and with the "mop" just to complete the book. By the time I got to the conclusion, I really only read it because I had already invested so much time and energy in it. Maybe my expectations were just erroneous; after all, this was the first of his works that I've read.
