Title : Rich Dad's Retire Young, Retire Rich: How to Get Rich Quickly and Stay Rich Forever! (Rich Dad)
Author : Robert T. Kiyosaki
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : More great ideas, more great context - huge value for money
This fourth book in the main series follows through the logical progression from 'taking care of your business' to retiring and doing what you want to do full time. Some people in the UK may find Robert Kiyosaki's American enthusiasm and repetitive writing style a bit hard to take - just stick with it and realise that making money is something that Americans do better then us! Others may say that you 'can't do those things here' - may I suggest to them that they need new advisors as I have not had any problems in implementing these ideas. I would read 'Rich Dad Poor Dad' and 'Cashflow Quadrant' before this book - could be a bit much at once otherwise.
The big gain from this, as with all the books, is the sense of challenge and attitude that comes across. Combined with the specific ideas for action and areas to think about Robert is able to lead you towards acheiving your financial goals, whatever they are.
Retiring before 45 is a dream that most us share, but few think is possible. I would rate these four books as being of equal value in helping me to be on track to reach this goal (despite having started at 31 years old), as my MBA. The MBA tells me how, Rich Dad helps me think of why, when and what.
The true value of these books is really demonstrated by their life expectancy on my book shelf at home. I have leant a number of copies of Rich Dad Poor Dad to friends and family, none of which have ever been returned! Since then my sister is now starting her own company and writing a book and friends have made some very profitable moves into property investment. None of these people, including myself, talked about such things before reading Robert's books.
Buy this book. Read it. then hide it and re-read it every few months - if you don't you will probably find that it disappears and those close to you start to have more money in their pockets!
A real delight.

Title : The Inheritance of Loss
Author : Kiran Desai
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : "Mythic battles of past and present, justice and injustice."
Writing with wit and perception, Kiran Desai creates an elegant and thoughtful study of families, the losses each member must confront alone, and the lies each tells to make memories of the past more palatable. Sai Mistry is a young girl whose education at an Indian convent school comes to an end in the mid-1980s, when she is orphaned and sent to live with her grandfather, a judge who does not want her and who offers no solace. Living in a large, decaying house, her grandfather considers himself more British than Indian, far superior to hard-working but poverty-stricken people like his cook, Nandu, whose hopes for a better life for his son are the driving force in his life.
The story of Sai, living in Kalimpong, near India's northeast border with Nepal, alternates with that of Biju, Nandu's son, an illegal immigrant trying to find work and a better life in America. Biju, working in a series of deadend jobs, epitomizes the plight of the illegal immigrant who has no future in his own country and who endures deplorable conditions and semi-servitude working illegally in the US. As Desai explores the aspirations of Sai and Biju, the hopes and expectations of their families, and their disconnections with their roots, she also creates vivid pictures of the friends and relatives who surround them, creating a vibrant picture of a broad cross-section of society and revealing the social and political history of India.
Though Sai's romance, at sixteen, with Gyan, her tutor, provides her with an emotional escape from Kalimpong, it soon becomes complicated by Gyan's involvement with the Gorkha National Liberation Federation, a Nepalese independence movement which quickly becomes bloody. Gyan's commitment to the insurgency offers an ironic contrast with the commitment of his family to the colonial British army in earlier times, just as the judge's hatreds, learned in England, are ironically contrasted with his British affectations in later life.
A careful observer of behavior, with a fine eye for revealing details, Desai brings her narrative and characters to life, illustrating her themes without making moral judgments about her characters-creating neither saints nor villains, just ordinary people leading the best lives they can, using whatever resources are available. Her characters, like people from all cultures, make sacrifices for their children, behave cruelly toward people they love, reject traditional ways of life and old values, rediscover what is important to them, suffer at the hands of faceless government officials, and learn, and grow, and make decisions, sometimes ill-considered, about their lives. Dealing with all levels of society and many different cultures, Desai shows life's humor and brutality, its whimsy and harshness, and its delicate emotions and passionate commitments in a novel that is both beautiful and wise. I found this book to be succinct without sacrificing the kind of detail that can save hours of research and trial and error. The topics are well-covered and the information is up to the minute. This book will be shared with all departments and be a constant reference point. Well worth the money!

Title : Mrs. Ted Bliss
Author : Stanley Elkin
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : A Miami widow's quirky odyssey of the heart.
Mrs. Ted Bliss is a widowed woman in a polyester pant suit living her last years in a Miami Beach condominium. When a local drug kingpin buys her dead husband's car, it triggers a remarkable chain of events that brings Mrs. Bliss face-to-face with the premises of her life as a dutiful wife. The authenticity that Elkin brings to Mrs. Bliss' inner dialogue and his characters' speech was so humorous and touching that I frequently had to collar somebody so I could read them the passages out loud. If you like to find the extraordinary in "ordinary" lives, if you have an ear for language, please give yourself and treat and pick up this book.

Title : The Old Fool's Retirement Guide
Author : Rob Davies
Rating : 1 Stars out of 5.
Summary : foolish retirement
After reading the uk guide to investing which was a first class book, plain speaking , a good lesson in reviewing one's finances, but this book is plainly stating the obvious ,we all now that we need a large pot to retire on, so the money spent on this would have been best spent towards that.

Title : One World, Ready or Not
Author : Wil Greider
Rating : 1 Stars out of 5.
Summary : An almost complete misunderstanding of economics
Paul Krugman of MIT - one of that rare breed, a serious economist who can write - has famously called this "an astonishingly silly book". I have to disagree: the book is much, much worse than that.
Greider's thesis boils down to the "global excess supply" nostrum - and it's based not only on a fundamental misunderstanding of economics but also on straightforward innumeracy and an inability to think critically. As Keynes tells us, wages reflect the marginal product of labour. Any increased production in the Third World must *go somewhere*, in the form of increased income either to labour (wages) or capital (profits). That increased income must be either spent or saved - so if there really were inadequate aggregate demand (or equivalently excess capacity) then we would expect savings to exceed profitable investment opportunities. Do they? Well, Greider provides no evidence - which is unsurprising....
Greider's economic analysis is thus wrong - indeed, absurd and intellectual disreputable. His policy recommendations derived from his wrong-headed arguments are downright destructive, however. They amount to a recipe for a misallocation of scarce resources to unproductive uses and a hike in inflation. There could be few more damaging courses for the developing world, or surer ways to cut real wages and depress living standards. But then the identity of interest between the far Left (Chomsky, Nader etc.) and the far Right (Pat Buchanan) has never had logic or reason on its side.
