age current in retirement uk

Online age current in retirement uk resources and information

It would be great if we could all retire with a nice portfolio of savings and pension income, without having to worry about paying the bills most retired people pay.

Yet...many retirees are living out their retirement on the breadline without much hope for even going on holiday without being assisted by relatives or even handouts. Don't let yourself be one of them...it's never too late!

Title : You'Ve Earned It, Don't Lose It: Mistakes You Can't Afford to Make When You Retire
Author : Suze Orman
Rating : 4 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Must read for anyone concerned with his/her estate.

Superbly written. Easy to read. Explains, in simple terms, trusts, investments, estate taxes, and things you MUST know as long before you approach retirment. Lays out some things you can't afford not to do. Best $10-$15 you ever spent. Could return payment in thousands.

Title : The Three Boxes of Life: How to Get Out of Them
Author : Richard Nelson Bolles
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : An expert's primer on building a balanced, satisfying life.

In a time when simplifying one's life, finding satisfaction and mission, and creating meaning are dominant issues for baby boomers and gen-x alike, this text is an unerring guide. Bolles patiently walks you through the process of evaluating and considering the roles of learning, working, and playing in your life. Constructing the optimal balance of those roles - the "three boxes" of the title - is up to you, but his guidance provides a starting place. This is a book I re-read, and re-consider, every two or three years.

Title : Mrs. Ted Bliss
Author : Stanley Elkin
Rating : 3 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Beautiful language, ugly plot

Mr. Elkin has a wonderful style, with phrases that you reread and say out loud to yourself, that you remember when you put the book down. But that's about all you remember, because the plot and the characters leave much to be desired. I think Elkin put a little too much into forming the most perfect, most beautiful sentences, and not enough into the actual story. I never cared about what happened to Dorothy, or anyone else in her mundane existance. Literature is not literature if it doesn't move you, and Mrs. Ted Bliss most definetly failed in that regard.

Title : How to Retire Rich
Author : James O'Shaughnessey
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : I am buying one of these books for each member of my family.

As an avid reader and a novice investor I could not put the book down. The information was clear and very understandable. I immediately went on line and was able to pull up the 50 stocks I will be using for Reasonable Runaways. My goal was to self manage my 401k. This has given me the tools to do so. I'm in it for the long term so will let you know in 25 years how the strategy worked. I feel strongly enough about the concept to share it with all my friends and family. Wouldn't it be fun to grow wealthy together???

I have also read "What Works on Wall Street". If you must chose between the two "How to Retire Rich" is the better book in my opinion. "What Works" does provide reinforcement of the ideas if that is important to you.

Title : Still Here: Embracing Aging, Changing and Dying
Author : Ram Dass
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Fierce grace

I have been fortunate enough to meet Ram Dass on two occasions including a five day meditation retreat. This book distills the experiences of a lifetime of searching for spiritual meaning. It is probably not the best introduction to him, but it will help anyone facing their "midlife crisis" or having to deal with experiences that confront you with your mortality. Will you "flunk the test" when it is time to leave your body behind?
It's worth keeping an eye out for the DVD "Fierce Grace" (from USA)which is a fine 90 minute documentary with interviews with Ram Dass before and as he manages his life after his stroke - as well as some excellent historical footage from his life in the sixties.
Namaste.

Title : Rich Dad's Retire Young, Retire Rich: How to Get Rich Quickly and Stay Rich Forever! (Rich Dad)
Author : Robert T. Kiyosaki
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : More great ideas, more great context - huge value for money

This fourth book in the main series follows through the logical progression from 'taking care of your business' to retiring and doing what you want to do full time. Some people in the UK may find Robert Kiyosaki's American enthusiasm and repetitive writing style a bit hard to take - just stick with it and realise that making money is something that Americans do better then us! Others may say that you 'can't do those things here' - may I suggest to them that they need new advisors as I have not had any problems in implementing these ideas. I would read 'Rich Dad Poor Dad' and 'Cashflow Quadrant' before this book - could be a bit much at once otherwise.

The big gain from this, as with all the books, is the sense of challenge and attitude that comes across. Combined with the specific ideas for action and areas to think about Robert is able to lead you towards acheiving your financial goals, whatever they are.

Retiring before 45 is a dream that most us share, but few think is possible. I would rate these four books as being of equal value in helping me to be on track to reach this goal (despite having started at 31 years old), as my MBA. The MBA tells me how, Rich Dad helps me think of why, when and what.

The true value of these books is really demonstrated by their life expectancy on my book shelf at home. I have leant a number of copies of Rich Dad Poor Dad to friends and family, none of which have ever been returned! Since then my sister is now starting her own company and writing a book and friends have made some very profitable moves into property investment. None of these people, including myself, talked about such things before reading Robert's books.

Buy this book. Read it. then hide it and re-read it every few months - if you don't you will probably find that it disappears and those close to you start to have more money in their pockets!

A real delight.
